frequently asked questions

High nutritional value, competitive pricing, and ready supply, all combine to make cereal grains attractive feed sources for the beef cattle sector. The cattle feeding sector relies on cereal grains as concentrated sources of energy, particularly in finishing rations where cereals make up to 90% of the ration dry matter. This heavy reliance on cereals as an energy source is due in part to the fact that the cost per unit of dietary energy is typically less for cereal grains than for any other readily available feed source. As well, cereal grains make an important contribution to the protein needs of growing and finishing cattle.

Feed conversion efficiency (FCE) is the amount of dry matter feed required to gain one unit of gain. In the case of beef cattle, this runs between 4.5 and 7.5 (the lower the number, the better). Beef cattle average a Feed conversion rate (FCR) of a 6:1 ratio (6 kg of feed for an animal to gain 1kg of live weight).

Yes, over feeding too much grain can cause health implications and rumen upsets. It is advised to keep accessible amounts to the levels recommended as part of a balanced diet.

Ensure your beef cattle have a high protein and nutritionally balanced diet that assists in achieving target weights.

A ration of 1.5-2kg per head per day is adequate for maintenance, but 2-2.5kg per head per day is preferable as it will ensure some growth.
